WebQuest | Strengths | Weaknesses
Grow School Greens | This Webquest has jobs for each person to fill which in the end, will have to work together for the best results. Good opportunity for collaboration. | If more people are in the class than there are jobs, some might be left out. They need to double up the people on the jobs so that they may work together to come up with the best solution for their job when they present to the other jobs.
Where is My Hero? | The Webquest has the students spilt up into groups of 4 so that they may discuss and debate on the qualities of a hero. | Most of the work for this Webquest is individual like interviewing and recording facts on famous people. The only thing they do together is pick 3 qualities of a hero.
Underground Railroad | This Webquest has the students into groups to listen to a story to help fill in the gaps pertaining to the Underground Railroad. | The majority of work in this Webquest is individual. The person finds their own information, writes their own journal, fills out their own graphic organizer.
Ice Cream | This Webquest splits up the work so that all members research, participate in the new flavor challenge, and designing a poster. They must work cooperatively which is a very good thing! | N/A
Ancient Egypt | This Webquest is to be done with a partner to design a brochure. | All the work in this lesson can be done individually, and most likely will be. All the research is done on their own.

DEJ #11
In this YouTube video, I found it very refreshing that they realize that there is almost too much for teachers to know. Teachers are very intelligent people with amazing capabilities, but it is a very messy business keeping up with all the new technology that keeps coming out. I'm glad that these two presenters understand this.
Another thing that I liked in this video is the importance they stressed on the combination of Pedagogy, Content, & Technology. I like that they say that "quality teaching is the transformation of content. It is the act of learning to think in a disciplined manner." because it is very true. Just because one is math person doesn't mean they can't expand their horizon to help the student get to a better understanding.
The last thing that I absolutely love about this presentation is that he says digital technology is a messy business because I agree. He goes on to tell of an example of the iPhone and how it is unstable. Technology, no matter how reliable, is unstable.

Ipad Assignment
As someone who is wanting to teacher on a level of kindergarten - 2nd grade, I chose apps that would be well suited for these grades.
The first app I downloaded was KIDS MATH FREE. In this game, the user uses math to gain points to earn special prizes for the next level. The math is very simple for the grade level I've chosen and includes a visual aid. For example if the problem 14-9 showed up, there would be 14 apples, with 9 of them crossed out. This makes it easier for the user to count what is left and to understand why this number is correct. The only draw back of this game is that to go beyond the first level, you must purchase the full game.
The second app I downloaded was LETTER SCHOOL LITE which is also a free game. This game is for reinforcing letter recognition! Since this game is the free version, the user can only use the letters A through E, to use other letters, you must buy the full version. The user picks a letter and then is shown a picture of a word that begins with that letter like the letter C, is shown a clown. There are 3 phases to this game: first the game shows you how to make the letter, second you trace the letter, & third you draw the letter on your own. This is very simple and age appropriate. If I had access to Ipads in the FSU READS program, I would definately use this app in my Kindergarten class.

Reflection:We are especially interested in broadening participation among girls. Even with strong efforts to increase female participation, only 30% of the participants in Lego Mindstorms robotics competitions are girls.
I find it very interesting that they're trying to reach out to girls. I know that I'm not that kind of girl to play with electrical parts, that's what I have a daddy for! It would be nice to see more girls be independent enough to use a program like Cricket or be interested in robotics. I also think that if I had the opportunity to use one a Cricket, with directions of course, I would try too. After World War II, I think our female population owes it to those women who stepped up and did the jobs for the men and showed the world that we were more than just housewives.

Gardens of Time
While I personally did not like the game due to its lack of challenge, this game does exhibit 5 of the 10 things Schools can Learn from Video Games (found on DEJ #9). The first one is 5. Ordered Problems. This means the the game compels the player to learn techniques or methods to solve problems. One technique that I used was to locate a few of the items listed before I started clicking because you can get a double bonus if you find the items quicker. The second is 1. Interaction. While this one isn't as prevalent as ordered problems, it still comes into play. Interaction is the player interacts with either other players or the environment of the game. In Gardens of Time, you interact with other players by hiding gifts in their garden for them to find. The next is 10. Exploring. This encourages players to explore and not move on too quickly. This game does this by letting you build in your garden instead of going on mission after mission. You have time to explore yours, and your neighbors gardens, and sometimes you find gift that they have hidden for you. Followed by 7. Context. Context is basically the help button and the instructions to help move you through the game. The man in the corner of the screen is always reminding you of a mission or that someone needs your help and how to navigate the page. The last thing found in this game is 3. Risk Taking. This is when there is no real risk in failing. In this game there's no risk in not finding all the hidden objects.

This quote was taken from the risk taking section of this article. I do agree with this statement because this is something that schools try to get their students to understand and use in daily life, especially Science. When reading this quote, the first thing I thought of was when I played Space Invaders, and after so many levels, the player has to face off against The Boss. I died many times trying to figure out a way to get past this alien until I played two player and my friend noticed that if you go to the very end of the corner, the alien can't shoot you. So we hid in the corner til The Boss moved, then came out and shot him. This method proved effective! In science, we're always told to form a hypothesis and test it. This is exactly what we did in the Space Invaders, and I agree that video games can help to utilize what they previously learned. This concept is utilized in boss encounters, which forces players to utilize previously learned skills to attempt, perhaps fail, and then use those initial failures to determine the pattern of behavior and gain feedback.

Activity #1 - Validate Website
Website: California's Velcro Crop under Challenge
Who:
1. Can you contact the company or author through a real world postal address or phone number?
No, this website did not provide a phone number or an address. There wasn't even a publishing company mentioned.
2. Has someone taken responsibility for the content of this Web site?
Ken Umbach which has a link to a site that the author made about himself.
3. Can you confirm that the company or author is a credible, authoritative source of information?
No, unless we credit the "Totally Bogus Biography" the author made about himself.
What:
1.What's the copyright status of material found on the site?
There was no publishing company found on the page.
2.Does the site clearly state the topics that it intends to address?
Yes, the information is easy to read and even includes a graph on the information presented.
3. Is emotion used as a means of persuasion?
This site is more about presenting the facts than a persuasion of the audience.
When:
1. Is it important that the information you're looking for be absolutely current?
Since the page was made in 1993, I think the information should be updated at least every 5 years. A lot has change in the 19 years the page was made.
2. Is a reference date provided to show when the material was put online, or when it was last updated?
By the title there is (1993) to suggest that was when this site was put up.
3. Do the links work?
Besides the link to the autobiography, the other links do not work.
Why:
1.Can I get the information faster offline?
Since I live in West Virginia, there probably isn't a lot of information on California available. It would be faster to search online.
2. Does the online material I'm finding suit my needs?
The information isn't very credible, but it does address the shortage on Velcro like I was looking for.
3. Am I able to verify this information?
No.

Reflection:More seriously, they put their faith in the "wisdom of crowds," believing that by having many people watching what appears there, errors and vandalism will be weeded out, sooner rather than later
Knowing the way that people function, I would not put my faith in the "wisdom of crowd," and I'm guessing my teachers have felt the same way considering when doing any kind of research, they forbid the use of Wikipedia information. I understand what the company is trying to do by putting the power in the people and showing the knowledge that individuals hold, but many people think of it as joke and don't put reliable information on the articles. I understand that many of the articles are reliable and very correct, but the bias that has been instilled in me has made me turn away from any kind of Wikipedia information.

Reflection:Advocates of digital media education agree that reading online demands different skills than reading print-only texts does.
I 100% agree with this statement. As an honor student my entire life, I've excelled at every kind of book work including reading out of a text book, taking notes by hand, and print outs, but as the world got more high tech and online, I wasn't gaining the skills I needed to succeed. The first time I had to take a read a story on the computer screen and then answer a series of questions about what I read, I exceeded the time frame because it was extremely difficult for me to read on the screen. If schools helped teach children at a younger age, reading on the computer screen versus a textbook would be much easier for them.

Response:Body language codes are specific to culture; this hand position, posture, and eyes would be read quite differently in a less egalitarian culture.
I knew that there are body language experts, and body language can be clues as to what the individual is actually thinking, but I didn't know that body language clues can be read differently in other cultures. I honestly thought that a gesture like arms across the chest is universally known as a clue of being closed off and not wanting to be touched. I find it fascinating that in America we think we're a melting pot, but we all think the same way when it comes to these clues. If we were to travel elsewhere, a simple gesture that we might think nothing of, would offend others in other cultures.

2. 2 or 3 ferry workers on the watch tower of the boat | The boat watch tower | Looking at the sea and/or watching the people get off the ferry. |
3. One of the mayors in a green shirt. | The ferry boat, a crane, a guide wall to the left | The mayor walking off the boat. |
4. Obama, 2 mayors, a coast guard official and background people | The boardwalk, the background people. | Walking off the boat and talking amongst themselves. |
1) There is going to be a meeting to bring important matters to a close.
2) Obama either seems confident in what he is about to do, or he's treating the matter as a joke. I can't tell the difference.
3) The coast guard offical is the most heated about the subject at hand because his body language in turned into who he is talking too and the other has a wide mouth as if shouting back a defense.
3 Questions that I wonder about this picture:
1) How are things being fixed by talking? A solution requires action other than jaw movement.
2) Does Obama understand the gravity of how this matter is affecting the area? And if he does, how do the people feel about his plan of action?
3) How long did it take from the time the oil leak began to when it was sealed off? How many days went by, how many creatures were killed, how much did business decrease, how long did it take for life to continue normally, if at all?

1.Media in Education is simply things used in classsroom to "instruct or to enteratain" (pg 3 Code of BestPractices in Fair Use) such as text, audio readers, and a movie reward for good behave. Whereas Media Literacy Education is the capacity to access, analyze, evaluate, and communicate messages in a wide variety of forms.(pg. 2)
2.Cultural Value is at the heart of social bargaining for Fair Use.
3. Copyrights today hold over more works for longer periods of time making it impossible for people to use the works for newer creations and innovations. That is why Fair Use is so important today.
4. Did the unlicensed use “transform” the material taken from the copyrighted work by using it for a different purpose than that of the original, or did it just repeat the work for the same intent and value as the original?
• Was the material taken appropriate in kind and amount, considering the nature of the copyrighted work and of the use? (pg.6)
If the answer to these questions are yes, then Fair Use is in act.
5. A teacher showing The Lion King in class as a teaching method is within the Fair Use Policy. It is used as an educational tool and had not changed the intent of the work.
6. Principle #4 because it directly relates to the students and how they may use copyrighted material to strengthen media literary skills as well as express and share meaning.
7. No, as long as the material is used in good faith, and not for illegal purposes, the material falls under Fair Use.
8. No. If the material is being used for educational purposes, then there should be no need to ask permission.
9. They shouldn't have too. Only educators in community-based organizations may not be covered by these exemptions, but theystill can claim the right to use copyrighted materials under the doctrine of fair use.(Pg. 9)
10. I was surprised that we really have a "right" to fair use. I just assumed it was more of a privelage of educators and not something that everyone was entitled too.

My video that I created in animoto and uploaded to Youtube was within use of the Fair Use Policy. I know it is because it was not blocked or deleted. I credited the pictures and the song I used. I didn't change or edit the pictures or song and kept them in their original way. My video was also for educational purposes and according to the Fair Use Policy, I can use the copyright material.

DEJ #4 Kinesthetic Learners
Reflection:"Increasing numbers of youngsters are routinely placed on "trials" of Ritalin, without first ruling out other factors that could be causing apparent ADHD symptoms. A kinesthetic learner may not need medication so much as innovative teaching methods."
I completely 100% agree with this quote. Many parents and teachers get frustrated and give up easily, so they take the easy way out and just label the child ADHD to give them medication and send them to a corner. Too many children are being labeled ADHD without actually having the deficit. Children who have attention deficit disorder don't grow out of it, but those who are mislabeled seem to. This, I would think, would be a sign that they are being mislabeled. When I become a teacher, I hope that I can reach out to these children and be able to hold their attention so that they won't be forced into this group.

Reflection:" She predicts that the number of “textisms” will stop growing as people continue to develop more proficiency in using handheld devices and as the devices continue to grow more sophisticated than simple telephone touch pads. She adds that part of the appeal of texting shorthands is their novelty, and that that will fade." (She meaning Naomi Baron)
I do agree with this quote for a number of reasons. When I received my first cell phone, it was like a game to make my messages contain as little characters as possible, but I soon grew bored of this game. People soon began using letters as whole words, and I couldn't understand what they were trying to say to me. This is when I first decided this was idiotic and my friends soon followed suit. I think Ms. Baron is right on point when she says that the appeal of textisms will soon fade. Not only will new phones make it easier to use correct English, but they will also correct you with the correct spelling.

Reflection:"Moreover, the visual learners like to organize their place, especially the place where they usually study and learn."
This quote in the article really caught my attention because I also tidy up my study place before I study. I can't concentrate on my work if there is alot of mess around. This also stuck out to me because our learning test suggested I was more of a kinesthetic learner. Although I confess to being this type of person, when you think about it, it's really weird to be so wrapped up about the place where you study. This really makes it clear to me that people not only learn in different ways but also study. Everything about learning isn't set in stone to be the same for every person.

The type of learner I am
If you couldn't tell, I am a Kinesthetic Learner! I learn by doing, which is why I emphasised my hands in my drawing.
I think my second highest was reading/writing followed by audio, but that's wrong. I would much rather learn through watching and demonstrating than listening to something. As a kinesthetic learner, I am in need of more hands on projects or lessons to help me fully understand what is being taught. As an example, in my Elementary Art class, we are learning to make clay. Instead of just giving us the directions to stow away for a time that we would need them, my professor is making clay with us and showing us how to model with it so that we may know in our future classrooms what works and what doesn't.
3 Examples of how technology can help me learn are if I were learning a dissection, a good practice run would be to use a smart board. I don't know the website off hand, but I had a teacher who showed us all the capabilities of the smart board and in so, she showed us the dissection app to use the right tools, and label the insides correctly as practice. (3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning A)
A second would be using Skype or other video chat to set up a "pen pal" in a foreign country to help students learning that language more relevant and personal. (3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning B)
A last example of how technology could help me learn is by finding out a new research that is going on and follow by making our own research on a smaller scale! (5. . Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership C)

DEJ #1 Education needs a digital-age upgrade
Reflection:"Individual workers needed to willingly perform discrete operations as opposed to whole jobs."
While I do agree that technology is important in today's world with all the advances and marvels around us, this quote scares me. For those of us who are considered "Middle Class" or "the Working Class", this quote is not something we look at with optimism. The economy today makes it very tough for an individual to find a job that may be kept for longer than a few months. According to this quote, jobs in the future will be even harder to hold on too. Although I may be reading this sentence as something it isn't, to me this means that an individual will have to settle for work that is promised today with no hope of returning to the same job tomorrow. To be honest, technology scares me as a whole. I do understand the good that technology offers and how desperately the world today needs the technological advances, but at the same time, I can also see the bad that technolody can offer us too. I do agree that education needs to change and to be moderized with how the world works so that we don't hinder our students. This quote, to me, just makes me feel that all the jobs we consider important, will soon be done by technology and such to the point that we have to hope it fails so we can have some work to fix it.

Get to know me!
My name is Alyssa Swiger, but I like to go by Allie! I grow up in the most northern county of West Virginia (Hancock). It is about 45 minutes south of Pittsburgh. I have a twin sister who unfortunately goes to Marshall University 3 hours away from FSU. :( I have a passion for helping others which is what drove me to choose education. Right now, I'm in the pre-elementary education program, but I just passed my PPST so I should be in the program before the end of the semester. I want to go on to get my masters in Special Education and get certifications in autisim as well as the hearing impaired.
